The short answer
Open both files, hold Incredible’s key and say what to compare, for example "reconcile every payment in the bank statement against the open items, and color each payment and the items it paid the same." It works in the open workbooks, reads PDFs in a folder if needed, and reports what it matched. For two versions of one workbook, Excel’s Spreadsheet Compare highlights every change.

Ask an AI to compare two Excel files and color what matches, PDFs included. How Incredible, Excel’s Spreadsheet Compare and ChatGPT each do it.
Two spreadsheets, one question: what in this file matches what in that one? Payments against invoices, this month's price list against last month's, the CRM export against the event sign-ups. Doing it row by row takes an afternoon and still misses one.
You can hand the matching to an AI. With Incredible, you open both files, hold the key and say what to compare. The recording above shows it reconciling a bank statement against an SAP export, with a folder of payment advice PDFs next to them.
Say what a match means, and how you want to see it:
"This bank statement has a krona account and a euro account, and this is an export of our SAP open items. Reconcile every payment against the outstanding items and see what has been paid. Use the payment advices in the folder if you need more detail. Color-code each payment and the items it paid in the same color."
Incredible plans the work, shows the plan in its bar at the top of the screen, and starts. In the recording it answers: "Done. Every payment now has its own color, all 15 of them. And each item it cleared carries the same fill with a legend at the bottom of the sheet." A card lists the full match, so you can check any pair or ask about one you are unsure of.
It also runs in the background. While it works, you can open another workbook and get on with something else.

Spreadsheet Compare is Microsoft's own tool for two versions of the same workbook. Microsoft's support page says it finds the changes and highlights them side by side, is available only in Excel for Windows, and comes with Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise and equivalent editions. You open it from Inquire, then Compare Files. It shows what changed; it does not match rows between two different files.
ChatGPT can compare files you give it. OpenAI's guide to data analysis says you can upload a CSV or Excel file and ask questions in plain language. You work on the copy you uploaded, in the chat, rather than in the workbook open on your computer. How Incredible compares with ChatGPT.
A lookup formula such as XLOOKUP is still the fastest way when both files share an exact key, like an invoice number. It struggles when the match needs judgment: a payment that covers two invoices, or a name spelled two ways.
| Incredible | Spreadsheet Compare | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matches rows across two different files | Yes, in your words | No, compares two versions | Yes, on uploaded copies |
| Works in your own workbook | Yes, colors and notes stay in the file | Shows changes in its own window | Works on the uploaded copy |
| Reads PDFs alongside | Yes, from a folder | No | If you upload them |
| Mac and Windows | Both | Windows, enterprise editions | Both, plus web |
Everything above about Spreadsheet Compare and ChatGPT is from Microsoft's and OpenAI's own pages, read on 21 October 2026.
A reconciliation is only useful if it is right. Look over the colored pairs and the report on the first run, and ask about anything that looks off: "why is the 4,200 payment matched to two invoices?" Once you trust how it works, you can teach it the job and run it every month.
Try this now. Open two spreadsheets that should agree, hold the key and say: "Compare these two files and color every row that appears in both." Incredible is free for 7 days with no card. Download it, or read the Quickstart first.
On a Mac in particular, see AI for Excel on Mac.
Yes. With both files open, ask Incredible what to compare in your own words, such as "match the payments in the bank statement against the open invoices." It works in the workbooks themselves, marks what it matched, and gives you a report of what it did. ChatGPT can compare files you upload to it, and Excel’s Spreadsheet Compare shows the differences between two versions of a workbook.
Say what a match is. For a reconciliation that might be "the same amount and invoice number"; for two lists of people, "the same email address." Incredible matches rows across the two files and colors each pair so you can check them. A lookup formula such as XLOOKUP works too when the match is exact.
Yes. In our recording, Incredible reconciled a bank statement and an SAP open items export, and was told it could read the payment advice PDFs in a folder for more detail. It works with the files where they are on your computer, with nothing to upload.
Yes, in some editions. Microsoft’s Spreadsheet Compare highlights the differences between two versions of a workbook. Microsoft says it is available only in Excel for Windows, in Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise and equivalent editions, under Inquire, then Compare Files.
It clicks and types in your browser, files and apps, exactly like you do.
